Crypto & Decentralized Future Gathering

Centralized

The Origin / Status Quo

Almost all of those who understand blockchain will include something along the lines of "because it is decentralized" in their list of reasons why it is so revolutionary. Various blockchain technologies provide more flexibility, transparency, resilience, and better incentivization for decentralized applications than currently available software. This is likely to be true, and whoever cited decentralization as an advantage was correct, but what does that even mean? Why should we care about a decentralized model?

Despite our repeated claims, why do we advocate for decentralized technologies?

Regardless of our socioeconomic situation, we are used to a world in which things are centralized: an economy governed by large conglomerates, decision-making processes concentrated in the hands of governments, and monetary systems controlled by central banks. Even so, that doesn't mean it has always been this way.

Not too long ago, the economy consisted of farmers, traders & artisans. In fact, one could argue that it was more similar to our newly branded "gig economies" & "peer to peer" networks, than anything else, as individuals and communities often bartered for goods and services in the town square. These town squares would soon evolve into the foundation of our modern day centralized systems, as the complexities of these transactions could no longer be managed directly by the people.

Increased Volume | Diversification of Goods & Services | Risk Mitigation | Liabilities | International Relations | Speed

Despite the fact that centralized systems work better for large societies, they are not necessarily more efficient. As they rely heavily on middlemen, bureaucracy and rules that can be broken, they tend to become slow, expensive and "too big to fail".

Decentralized

The Future & Its Use Cases

There's no doubt that the decentralization trend is here to stay, and that's a good thing, whether it be Web 3.0, DeFi, Crypto, Blockchain, or the electrical grid. Whenever you decentralize, you gain resilience, autonomy, and agency.

In the future, the internet will probably be powered by public blockchains, which have gained prominence for their role in cryptocurrency transactions. Decentralization is the key to Web3, so that instead of users gaining access to the internet via online services like Google, Apple, or Facebook, the individuals manage and control their own personal portions of the internet. Its user-centered design means no central authorities prescribe what services users use, nor does it require an intermediary to facilitate inter-party virtual transactions between two or more parties. It also theoretically protects user privacy better, since these authorities and intermediaries are the ones who are collecting most of the data.

What will we make of it?

At this Gathering, we will discuss the pros and cons of decentralization and how it will likely impact your lives.  Autonomy and agency for the people is something we believe makes the world a better place.

Can true decentralized communities be re-born?

Will large scale investments interrupt any altruistic intentions?

Which start-ups & platforms are on the right path?

How can a de-centralized world, create a better future for all?

What can we do?
